Yoga – Benefits and basic poses for beginners
Yoga is an ancient and complex spiritual practice that has gained popularity due to its benefits for physical and mental well-being. Usually, yoga involves the inclusion of other elements. However, in the country, the main focus lies on postures, meditation, and breathing techniques. Today, there are different types of yoga styles. While some are gentle, others can prove to be physically demanding. Hence it’s considered best to join yoga classes and learn from instructors.
What are the benefits of yoga?
Typically, yoga includes self-disciplinary and contemplative practices such as prayer, meditation, breathing exercises, and chanting to support healing and reduce stress. Some of the other benefits of yoga have been mentioned below.
Improves flexibility
One of the most important components of physical health is flexibility. But as one begins to age, one can experience decreased flexibility. To counter this issue, one can pick between different yoga styles and intensities. Even if one chooses the lowest intensity styles, one can reap benefits such as increased blood flow to warm up the muscles. This, in turn, provides the muscles with more flexibility.
Reduces inflammation
In most cases, illnesses can have a common precursor – chronic inflammation. This includes major diseases such as diabetes, Crohn’s disease, arthritis, and heart disease.
Research on the topic has concluded that when patients with chronic inflammation try yoga, irrespective of duration, style, and intensity, there is a reduction in their biochemical markers of inflammation. This, in turn, reduces the risk of developing other chronic health issues.
Increases strength
Although most people consider yoga for increased flexibility, a few forms of yoga can help build strength. Usually, this depends on the approach, level, and the yoga instructor who can suggest the poses according to one’s goal. For instance, the chair pose can provide benefits similar to a squat exercise.
What are some common yoga exercises that beginners can try?
One must sign up for yoga classes and learn the poses when trying yoga as a beginner. But it’s important to start slow and gradually take up different styles and intensities according to one’s comfort and capability.
With that being said, here are some simple yoga exercises for beginners:
Child’s pose
A resting pose, the Child’s pose requires one to spread the knees in a shape resembling the letter “V’ with the big toes touching. Then, rest the bottom on the heels. This must be followed by lengthening the spine and stretching forward. One can extend the arms during the pose or tuck them behind. This pose helps slow down breathing and even calm the mind.
Downward facing dog
In this pose, one must place themselves in such a manner that when facing down, the fingers point towards the end of the mat. Then, spread the fingers and equally distribute the body weight on the hands. Afterward, lift one knee off the floor and reach for the pelvis upward. When done right, the body will automatically take the shape of the letter “A” and stretch the muscles of the calves, hamstrings, and spine.
In addition to these steps, one can try others and use optional yoga equipment like blankets, blocks, straps, and bolsters for increased comfort.
