Atopic dermatitis – Causes, symptoms, remedies, and more

Christopher Davis

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease affecting millions worldwide. This condition can cause intense itching, redness, and scaly patches on the skin, leading to discomfort and embarrassment. It is estimated that 15-20% of children and 1-3% of adults have atopic dermatitis. Even though this condition is not lethal, life with atopic dermatitis can get very uncomfortable. With timely diagnosis and treatment, this condition can be managed.

Causes
The root causes of atopic dermatitis are not fully understood, but it is considered a mix of genetic and environmental factors. People with atopic dermatitis have soft skin, which does not protect the body from irritants and allergens that penetrate the skin and trigger an immune response. This can cause inflammation and skin damage, leading to the characteristic symptoms of atopic dermatitis.

Symptoms
The symptoms of atopic dermatitis are:

  • Intense itching
  • Red or brownish-gray patches of skin
  • Small raised bumps that can ooze or crust over
  • Thickened, scaly, or cracked skin

The skin may become severely infected, leading to painful blisters or sores.

Foods to eat when having atopic dermatitis
Following a healthy and balanced meal plan rich in nutrients supporting healthy skin function is essential when one is affected by atopic dermatitis. Some foods that may help manage symptoms of atopic dermatitis include:

  • Foods abundant in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish, nuts, and seeds
  • Foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables
  • Probiotics are good bacteria that can improve gut health and reduce inflammation. Adding probiotics to your meals or taking supplements may help manage atopic dermatitis.

Remedies
Some remedies that may help manage atopic dermatitis:

  • Keeping the skin moisturized is crucial in managing atopic dermatitis. Apply moisturizer on the affected area several times daily to prevent dryness and itching. Choose a fragrance-free moisturizer and avoid ones with alcohol or other irritants.
  • An oatmeal bath can be beneficial in soothing the skin and reducing itching due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Coconut oil can moisturize and has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe the skin and reduce itching. Apply coconut oil on the affected area several times a day.
  • Aloe vera, with anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties, can soothe the skin and decrease itching. Applying fresh aloe vera gel throughout the affected area keeps the skin protected.
  • A cold compress on the affected skin can reduce itching and inflammation.
  • Stress can worsen the symptoms of atopic dermatitis. Engage in activities that relax and reduce stress, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises.

Treatment options
Treatment methods for atopic dermatitis can vary depending on the severity of the condition but typically involve a combination of lifestyle changes, prescriptions, and other therapies. If you’re struggling with inflammation and symptoms, your doctor may prescribe topical corticosteroids or immunomodulators. If your condition is severe, it is recommended that you undergo phototherapy, a light-based treatment that aids in managing it effectively.

Although living with atopic dermatitis can be challenging, proper care and management can control symptoms, and one can live a wholesome and active life. One need not be afraid to seek help and support; always remember to care for yourself and your skin.
